Freight is won on reliability and lost on one missed delivery window

Shippers award contracts on numbers they can check: on-time performance, damage and shortage claims, documentation accuracy, driver incident rate. Certification turns those from assertions in a bid document into audited processes with named owners and records. It is also how a forwarder clears the security review that now precedes any system integration.

You need certification if…

  • !A 3PL tender scores road safety performance and asks for a certified management system before the commercial envelope is opened.
  • !Cargo theft, or a broken seal on a high-value lane, has triggered a customer investigation with a deadline attached.
  • !Applying for authorised economic operator or trusted trader status and finding the security controls exist only in practice.
  • !Reefer temperature excursions on food or pharmaceutical loads are being discovered at delivery rather than in transit.
  • !Clearing agents and port intermediaries handle payments that nobody at head office can fully account for.
  • !An EDI integration with a multinational shipper has stalled inside their information security questionnaire.

What an auditor actually walks into

The audit covers the yard, the loading dock, the driver’s daily check sheet, access rights on the transport management system, and the last three service failures.

How Certification Works - 4 Steps

No black box. A defined, time-bound route from first call to certificate in hand.

Application & Proposal

List fleet size and modes, warehouse and terminal locations, whether hazardous or temperature-controlled cargo is carried, and how much capacity is subcontracted to partner networks or owner-drivers.

1–2 days

Gap Review & Readiness

Ask who vetted the owner-driver on last Tuesday’s high-value lane. On most operators the answer is a phone call and an insurance certificate nobody checked the expiry on.

1–2 weeks

Stage 1 + Stage 2 Audit

Stage 2 goes to the yard and the dock: vehicle-pedestrian separation, load securing, seal and handover records, telematics and fatigue data, reefer download logs, and how one claim was investigated.

Scheduled around operations

Certificate Issued

A shipper’s procurement team, or a customs authority weighing your application, treats an IAS-accredited certificate as third-party evidence. A self-declaration on the bid form carries none of that weight.

Valid 3 years
Most operators certify in five to nine weeks, longer where several depots are sampled; the tender or customs application date belongs in the proposal rather than in a call three weeks later, because the plan is built backwards from it.

Management System

10
ISO 9001
Quality Management System
Management SystemOpen full page →
Why it applies hereLogistics is bought on reliability: on-time delivery, damage rates, documentation accuracy and responsiveness when something goes wrong. ISO 9001 puts measurable controls around order handling, subcontractor selection and claims resolution, and gives shippers evidence of process discipline. It is the most commonly specified prerequisite in 3PL and freight forwarding tenders.Typical trigger: 3PL and freight tenders
ISO 14001
Environmental Management System
Management SystemOpen full page →
Why it applies hereFleets, warehouses and terminals generate fuel emissions, hazardous waste, effluent and noise. ISO 14001 controls these impacts and evidences compliance with transport and environmental permissions, while providing the fuel and emissions data multinational shippers now require from their logistics partners as part of scope 3 reporting.Typical trigger: Shipper emissions reporting; permits
ISO 45001
Occupational Health & Safety
Management SystemOpen full page →
Why it applies hereDrivers, loaders, forklift operators and warehouse staff face road risk, manual handling injuries and vehicle-pedestrian collisions. ISO 45001 controls fatigue, load handling, yard traffic and contractor safety, and reduces both incident frequency and the insurance loading that follows. Large industrial shippers audit contractor safety records before awarding work.Typical trigger: Shipper safety audits; insurance
ISO 28000
Supply Chain Security Management
Management SystemOpen full page →
Why it applies hereCargo faces theft, tampering, smuggling and diversion at every handover. ISO 28000 requires security threat assessment across routes, facilities and subcontractors, with access control, seal integrity and verification of partners. It aligns closely with AEO and customs trusted trader expectations and is often the deciding factor in high-value and pharmaceutical logistics contracts.Typical trigger: AEO alignment; high-value cargo
ISO 39001
Road Traffic Safety Management
Management SystemOpen full page →
Why it applies hereRoad transport operators carry the risk of fatal collisions involving their own drivers and the public. ISO 39001 targets that directly through speed, journey planning, vehicle condition, driver competence and fatigue controls, with measured casualty reduction outcomes. It is the standard that distinguishes serious fleet operators in tenders where road safety performance is scored.Typical trigger: Fleet tenders; road safety scoring
ISO 55001
Asset Management System
Management SystemOpen full page →
Why it applies hereTrucks, trailers, reefers, forklifts, cranes and warehouse infrastructure represent most of a logistics balance sheet. ISO 55001 aligns maintenance, replacement and capital decisions to whole-life cost and availability, reducing breakdown-driven service failures and giving lenders and investors a defensible asset strategy.Typical trigger: Fleet capital planning; investor scrutiny
ISO 22301
Business Continuity Management
Management SystemOpen full page →
Why it applies herePort closures, strikes, cyber incidents on transport management systems and extreme weather all interrupt logistics with immediate customer impact. ISO 22301 requires impact analysis by lane and service, alternate routing and site arrangements, and tested recovery. Shippers increasingly ask for continuity evidence during supply chain risk assessment.Typical trigger: Supply chain risk assessment
ISO 37001
Anti-Bribery Management System
Management SystemOpen full page →
Why it applies hereFreight, customs and port operations involve frequent contact with officials and agents, creating facilitation payment exposure across borders. ISO 37001 establishes third-party due diligence, controls over agents and clearing houses, and a reporting channel, which multinational shippers subject to FCPA and UK Bribery Act require of their logistics providers.Typical trigger: Multinational shipper compliance
ISO/IEC 27001
Information Security Management
Management SystemOpen full page →
Why it applies hereTransport management systems, EDI links, customs filings and customer shipment data make logistics providers an attractive target and a route into customer networks. ISO/IEC 27001 provides access control, supplier security and incident response, and is now standard in the security questionnaires shippers send before integrating systems.Typical trigger: System integration; shipper questionnaires
ISO 22000
Food Safety Management System
Management SystemOpen full page →
Why it applies hereCold chain and food logistics carry direct food safety responsibility for temperature control, hygiene of vehicles and containers, segregation and traceability. ISO 22000 applied to transport and storage evidences that control, which food manufacturers and retailers require before appointing a distribution partner.Typical trigger: Cold chain and food distribution contracts
Most requested combination

Integrated Management System - ISO 9001 + ISO 14001 + ISO 45001

One integrated audit instead of three separate ones. Shared documentation, fewer audit days, lower total cost, and the exact trio that tenders and corporate buyers ask transport and logistics suppliers for.

Not Sure Which Certification You Need?

Three questions. The selector reads the same industry-to-standard mapping this whole site is built on, then shortlists what applies to you.

Question 2 of 3

What has put certification on the table right now?

Sector: Transport and Logistics

The tender scores road safety before it scores rate

One visit instead of three: auditing quality, road safety and security together keeps the yard disturbed once and takes days out of the total. For most fleet operators that is the whole decision.

What Certification Changes for Transport and Logistics Businesses

Certification is not a certificate on the wall. It is a working system that pays for itself.

📊

Score higher in freight tenders

Bid evaluations increasingly weight safety and security performance separately from rate. Certification converts a claim about process discipline into points on the scorecard.

🛞

Fewer collisions, lower premiums

Route planning, fatigue management and vehicle condition control the incidents that drive claims. Underwriters read a certified road traffic safety system as reduced exposure.

🔗

Control subcontracted capacity

Partner networks and owner-drivers carry your customer’s cargo under your name. Vetting, insurance checks and performance review make that risk visible before it becomes a claim.

🛃

Support customs facilitation status

Trusted trader schemes examine premises security, partner vetting and cargo integrity. A certified supply chain security system covers most of the same evidence in one place.

❄️

Prove the cold chain held

Food and pharma customers pay for temperature integrity, not for good intentions. Monitored transport and documented handovers settle disputes without writing off the load.

🔌

Clear the shipper’s security review

System integration stops dead at the information security questionnaire. Certified access control, supplier security and incident response move the EDI project back onto the schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what buyers ask before they commit to certification.

Does ISO 28000 get us authorised economic operator status?
Not automatically. AEO and equivalent trusted trader programmes are granted by customs authorities against their own criteria, and no certification body can issue that status. What ISO 28000 does is build and evidence most of the underlying controls those programmes examine: premises security, partner vetting, cargo integrity, personnel screening. Applicants with a certified system typically move through assessment with fewer findings.
We subcontract most of our fleet. Can we still certify?
Yes, and it is common. The system has to cover how partner capacity is selected, verified, instructed and monitored, because the customer holds you responsible for cargo on a vehicle you do not own. Expect the auditor to sample partner files: insurance currency, licensing, safety history, incident reporting obligations and evidence that poor performers were actually removed.
What does ISO 39001 add if we already hold ISO 45001?
ISO 45001 protects workers; ISO 39001 targets road deaths and serious injuries, including those suffered by other road users. It works on the factors that decide collision outcomes: speed management, route planning, vehicle condition, driver competence, fatigue. Tenders that score road safety performance ask for it by name because a general safety certificate does not evidence those specific controls.
Can a certificate cover several depots and branch offices?
Yes. Multi-site certification samples locations across the three-year cycle where a central function genuinely sets procedures and monitors performance. Sample size follows site count and risk profile, so a network of small branches is treated differently from four large distribution centres. Sites added after certification are brought into scope at the next surveillance audit.
Our customer wants temperature evidence for every load. What actually satisfies them?
Calibrated monitoring with downloadable records tied to the consignment, documented handover checks at collection and delivery, and a defined excursion procedure showing who was told and what was decided. Certification matters here because it verifies the calibration schedule and the excursion investigations, which is precisely where disputes over rejected loads are won or lost.
How disruptive is the audit to operations?
Audits are planned around your operation rather than against it. Yard observation happens during loading because that is when the controls are visible, driver interviews are scheduled around shifts, and document review runs in the office in parallel. Most single-site logistics audits take two to three days on site, with management interviews taking a few hours in total.
