Straight answers to what buyers ask before they commit to certification.

Which certification do chemical buyers ask for most often?
ISO 9001, and usually ISO 14001 alongside it. Industrial customers screen on quality system certification first because it covers batch control, specification management and complaint handling. Environmental certification follows quickly, because their own reporting obligations now reach into the supply base. Safety certification tends to be asked for by larger multinationals and by anyone whose contractors will work on your site.
Can one certificate cover several plants and a toll manufacturer?
Multi-site certification is possible where the sites run under one management system and one central function. Toll manufacturers are different: they are a separate legal entity, so they sit in your scope as an outsourced process you must control and audit, not as a certified site. SIS defines this in the proposal before any audit is booked.
Does ISO 45001 cover process safety management?
Partly. ISO 45001 covers the occupational side thoroughly - hazard identification, permit-to-work, isolation, contractor control, emergency response and incident investigation. It does not replace process hazard analysis, relief system design or mechanical integrity engineering. Most chemical sites run process safety as a technical discipline and use ISO 45001 as the management framework that keeps competence, permits and contractors under control.
A customer disputed our certificate of analysis. Does ISO/IEC 17025 help?
Yes, and it is the usual answer to that problem. ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation makes a result defensible by requiring validated methods, calibration traceable to national standards, participation in proficiency testing and demonstrated analyst competence. When a figure is challenged, an accredited laboratory produces the method record, the calibration chain and the uncertainty statement. An unaccredited one produces an argument.
How long does certification take for a chemical plant?
Six to ten weeks is typical for a single site with a working system, from application to certificate. Shutdown periods, campaign production and laboratory readiness move the date more than anything else. Stage 1 and Stage 2 are scheduled around your operations rather than against them. If a customer has set an audit deadline, say so at proposal stage.
Is an accredited certificate really different from a cheap one?
It is the whole point. An IAS-accredited certificate issued under the IAF arrangement can be checked by any buyer, tender authority or regulator against the accreditation body’s register. Non-accredited certificates fail exactly at that step, usually during vendor verification and after the contract has already been quoted, and the company pays twice to redo the work properly.
