European partners keep asking for proof of our sustainability claims. What satisfies them?
An audited standard written for the sector. ISO 21401 covers environmental, social and economic management for accommodation and tourism operations, and ISO 20121 does the same for events. Both are certifiable, meaning an outside body has tested the claim. A self-declared policy, a carbon calculator screenshot or a membership logo generally will not close the question.
We use third-party guides, drivers and boats. Does certification cover them?
It covers how you select, brief and monitor them, which is the part you control and the part that usually fails. Auditors look for documented vetting, evidence of licences and competence, contract terms on safety and equipment, and records showing you actually checked rather than assumed. A supplier’s own certificate helps but does not move your responsibility.
Our food is prepared at remote camps with no permanent kitchen. Can HACCP apply?
Yes, and it suits exactly this situation. HACCP works on the hazards in your process rather than on the building: water source and treatment, cold chain from the point of purchase, cooking and holding temperatures, handler hygiene, and separation of raw from ready-to-eat food. The records are simple, portable and checkable at the camp.
What does ISO 22301 mean for a travel business in practice?
It means somebody has decided in advance who calls the traveller’s family, who books the alternative flights, where the money comes from and what is said publicly. Impact analysis identifies which services must be restored and how quickly, and the plan is then tested. Trade partners and insurers ask about this after every major disruption.
Which standard covers traveller data?
ISO/IEC 27701 extends an information security system to privacy: lawful basis, retention limits, transfer controls between partners and countries, and handling of data subject requests. Your own jurisdiction’s data protection law sits alongside it. Most now impose notice, consent, breach reporting and a complaints route, and the duty follows the traveller rather than your office address. European partners usually ask about both before exchanging traveller records.
How long does the certificate last and what happens each year?
Three years, with a surveillance audit annually to confirm the system is still working. For seasonal operators, surveillance is normally scheduled inside the operating season so the auditor sees delivery rather than an empty office. Recertification at the end of year three reviews the whole system, including how well complaints and incidents were handled.
