ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Certification that clears contractor pre-qualification

Somebody was hurt, an insurer raised the loading, or a principal contractor made certification a condition of the next order. ISO 45001 proves that hazards are identified before the work starts, that controls follow a hierarchy rather than a poster, and that workers had a say in both.

What it is

ISO 45001 is the international standard for an occupational health and safety management system. It covers how an organisation finds hazards, controls risk to workers and contractors, prepares for emergencies, investigates incidents and involves workers throughout.

Who issues it

A certification. An accredited certification body audits and issues the certificate. It is not a safety inspection, not a regulator’s approval, and it does not transfer the employer’s duty.

Validity

Three-year certificate, surveillance audited each year, with recertification before expiry; incident performance is reviewed at every visit.

Who gets asked for it

Construction, manufacturing, energy, logistics and facilities employers whose clients, insurers or principal contractors examine safety before awarding work.

Application & Proposal

We scope by risk, not just headcount: activities performed, shifts, sites and projects running, contractor numbers on site, and whether transient work locations belong inside the certificate.

Gap Review & Readiness

Permits give it away. A hot work permit issued at seven, the job done by ten, and the closure signed at shift end by someone who never went back to look.

1–2 weeks

Stage 1 + Stage 2 Audit

Stage 1 checks the hazard register, legal duties and readiness. Stage 2 goes where the work happens, interviews workers without their supervisor present, and follows permits, isolations and incidents end to end.

Scheduled around operations

Certificate Issued

Insurers and principal contractors ask for the certificate number and check it against the issuing body’s register. Surveillance goes back to the same high-risk activities and asks what last year’s incidents changed.

Four to eight weeks is typical, though sites with active projects need the audit timed to when high-risk work is running; send the construction programme with the application and the visit is booked against it rather than against a quiet shutdown week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what buyers ask before they commit to ISO 45001.

Does ISO 45001 certification reduce our legal liability?
It does not transfer or remove the employer’s duty, and no certificate ever will. What it produces is documented evidence that hazards were assessed, controls chosen in a defensible order, competence verified and incidents investigated. After a serious incident that record is the first thing requested, and its absence is usually the more damaging finding.
How is ISO 45001 different from OHSAS 18001?
OHSAS 18001 was withdrawn and its certificates expired during the migration period; ISO 45001 replaced it. The differences that matter are stronger requirements on top management involvement, on understanding the context and interested parties, on worker consultation and participation, and on managing contractors and outsourced work rather than treating them as somebody else’s problem.
Do contractors and agency workers count in our scope?
Yes, wherever you control or influence their work. ISO 45001 uses the term worker deliberately: it covers employees, agency staff, subcontractors and anyone else exposed by your activities. Auditors will look at how contractors are selected, inducted, supervised and included in incident reporting, because that is where serious incidents concentrate in most sectors.
Can we certify if we had a serious incident last year?
Yes. Certification is not a claim that nothing has gone wrong. Auditors look at whether the incident was reported as law requires, investigated to underlying cause, and followed by corrective action that has been verified as effective. A concealed incident, or one closed with retraining and nothing else, is a far bigger problem at audit.
What safety data will the auditor want to see?
Incident and near-miss records with investigation outcomes, lost-time figures for the period, risk assessments for the tasks running that day, permits issued in the last weeks, training and competence records for high-risk work, statutory inspection reports for lifting and pressure equipment, and evidence of what management review did with all of it.
How long does ISO 45001 certification take?
Four to eight weeks from application for a prepared organisation. The scheduling constraint is different from other standards: the audit has to happen while representative high-risk work is under way. A construction business audited between projects, or a plant audited during shutdown, gives the auditor nothing meaningful to sample.
