ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Certification that clears contractor pre-qualification
Somebody was hurt, an insurer raised the loading, or a principal contractor made certification a condition of the next order. ISO 45001 proves that hazards are identified before the work starts, that controls follow a hierarchy rather than a poster, and that workers had a say in both.
You need ISO 45001 if…
- !Your name stays on the principal contractor’s approved subcontractor list only if an ISO 45001 certificate is attached to it.
- !Something reportable happened, and the investigation cannot say which control was supposed to have stopped it.
- !Your insurer has raised the employer liability premium and asked what has changed since the last claim.
- !A tender now scores safety performance and asks for lost-time figures alongside a certificate number.
- !Contractors work on your site under permits nobody checks after issue, and the near misses are stacking up.
- !A client’s responsible sourcing audit flagged missing risk assessments for tasks your crews do every day.
ISO 45001 is the international standard for an occupational health and safety management system. It covers how an organisation finds hazards, controls risk to workers and contractors, prepares for emergencies, investigates incidents and involves workers throughout.
A certification. An accredited certification body audits and issues the certificate. It is not a safety inspection, not a regulator’s approval, and it does not transfer the employer’s duty.
Three-year certificate, surveillance audited each year, with recertification before expiry; incident performance is reviewed at every visit.
Construction, manufacturing, energy, logistics and facilities employers whose clients, insurers or principal contractors examine safety before awarding work.
Where this certification is demanded
ISO 45001 is applicable across 25 of the 25 industries SIS covers. The pages below set out the specific reason it comes up in each one.
What ISO 45001 Actually Requires
The backbone an implementer has to build, in the order it usually gets built.
The sites and activities covered, and every worker inside them: employees, agency labour, contractors and visitors whose exposure you control or influence.
Non-managerial workers genuinely consulted on hazards, controls and investigations, with committees, representatives and a route to raise a risk without fear of reprisal.
Routine and non-routine tasks assessed, emergency situations included, with controls applied in order of elimination, substitution, engineering, administrative measures, then personal protective equipment.
Health and safety obligations identified and tracked, statutory inspections and health surveillance scheduled, and competence proven for high-risk work rather than assumed from experience.
Permit-to-work, isolation and lock-off, machine guarding, contractor selection and induction, procurement conditions, and management of change before layouts or processes are altered.
Incidents and near misses reported, investigated to underlying cause, actions tracked to closure, performance monitored with leading indicators and taken into management review.
How ISO 45001 Certification Works
No black box. A defined, time-bound route from first call to certificate in hand.
Application & Proposal
We scope by risk, not just headcount: activities performed, shifts, sites and projects running, contractor numbers on site, and whether transient work locations belong inside the certificate.
1–2 daysGap Review & Readiness
Permits give it away. A hot work permit issued at seven, the job done by ten, and the closure signed at shift end by someone who never went back to look.
1–2 weeksStage 1 + Stage 2 Audit
Stage 1 checks the hazard register, legal duties and readiness. Stage 2 goes where the work happens, interviews workers without their supervisor present, and follows permits, isolations and incidents end to end.
Scheduled around operationsCertificate Issued
Insurers and principal contractors ask for the certificate number and check it against the issuing body’s register. Surveillance goes back to the same high-risk activities and asks what last year’s incidents changed.

Not Sure Which Certification You Need?
Three questions. The selector reads the same industry-to-standard mapping this whole site is built on, then shortlists what applies to you.
Which sector best describes your organisation?
Book the audit for when the risky work runs
Picture the auditor on your site at seven in the morning, watching an isolation being applied. That is the audit. The rest - the policy, the registers - takes an afternoon.

Certification is not a certificate on the wall. It is a working system that pays for itself.
Contractor lists reopened
Principal contractors and operators screen on safety before they look at price, and an accredited certificate is the evidence that gets you past that screen.
Lower incident and claim cost
Fewer lost-time incidents show up in premium negotiation, in claims history, and in the days production stops while an investigation and a regulator visit run their course.
Due diligence on record
After a serious incident, the first request is for evidence that risk was assessed, controls chosen and competence verified. Directors either have that file or they do not.
Workers actually consulted
The consultation requirement puts hazards into the open early. Expect near-miss reporting to rise before injuries fall; a spike in reports is the system starting to work.
Contractors held to standard
Selection criteria, induction and permit discipline extend your controls to the contractor workforce, where a disproportionate share of serious incidents happens.
One system, three certificates
The shared clause structure means quality and environmental certification reuse the same audits, reviews and corrective action process rather than duplicating them.

Task-based risk assessment and control sheet
A format that records the hazard, the control level chosen and why lower-order controls were rejected, which is what auditors probe.
Permit-to-work audit checklist for supervisors
Issue, verification, isolation proof, handback and cancellation - the five points where permit systems usually fall apart, with what to check at each.
Investigating incidents beyond operator error
How to reach the decisions, workload pressures and design choices sitting behind an incident, so the corrective action holds beyond the next shift.
Worker consultation that satisfies clause 5.4
What genuine participation looks like in practice, and the evidence auditors accept from small, dispersed and contractor-heavy organisations without a formal committee.
