CMMI rates how consistently you run requirements, estimation, configuration management, verification and project monitoring across real projects. An appraisal by a certified lead appraiser produces a rating that procurement teams check before they will accept a bid.

A model of engineering and management practices, and a formal appraisal against it. CMMI looks at how projects are actually run - requirements, planning, estimation, configuration control, verification, supplier management - and awards a maturity level based on evidence from sampled projects.
A benchmark appraisal is conducted by a certified lead appraiser under the CMMI model and published in the appraisal results directory. It is a rating, not a management-system certificate.
A benchmark appraisal rating is valid for three years and is publicly listed. There is no annual surveillance; you re-appraise before expiry to stay bid-eligible.

What CMMI Actually Requires
The backbone an implementer has to build, in the order it usually gets built.
A process library covering the project lifecycle, tailored per project rather than photocopied, with the tailoring decisions recorded and approved before work starts.
Requirements captured, agreed with the customer, baselined and traceable through design, code and test, with a controlled route for handling change.
Estimates built from a documented basis and historical data, plans covering effort, schedule, resource and risk, and a record of what was re-planned and why.
Baselines under version control, change requests reviewed before they are applied, and build records that let you rebuild any released version from source.
Peer reviews and testing planned against the requirements, with defects logged, dispositioned and closed, and evidence that reviews happened on the projects being sampled.
Project data collected consistently - effort variance, defect density, review coverage - analysed at organisation level and fed back into the process assets.

Readiness Review & Scoping
The organisational unit, project sample and target maturity level are agreed with a certified lead appraiser, along with which practice areas fall inside the appraisal scope.
1–2 weeksProcess Implementation Period
A process written this quarter cannot evidence a project that finished last one. Practices have to run on live work, and two to four project cycles is the usual wait.
3–9 months typicallyReadiness Assessment & Evidence Mapping
Project artefacts are mapped to practice areas and gaps closed before the benchmark. A readiness pass is where weak traceability and missing peer review records surface.
