The maturity level written into the tender you want to bid

A tender says Maturity Level 3 or better and your delivery organisation has never been appraised. CMMI rates how consistently you run requirements, estimation, configuration management, verification and project monitoring across real projects. An appraisal by a certified lead appraiser produces a rating that procurement teams check before they will accept a bid.

You need CMMI if…

  • !A government or defence software tender lists Maturity Level 3 as a pass or fail criterion.
  • !A prime contractor is flowing down process maturity requirements to its development subcontractors.
  • !Delivery estimates keep slipping and nobody can say which projects follow which process.
  • !An offshore development centre is competing on process credibility against already-appraised rivals.
  • !Your rating expires within twelve months and bids submitted after that date will be rejected.
  • !Client audits keep finding requirements traceability that stops at the design document.
What it is

A model of engineering and management practices, and a formal appraisal against it. CMMI looks at how projects are actually run - requirements, planning, estimation, configuration control, verification, supplier management - and awards a maturity level based on evidence from sampled projects.

Who issues it

A benchmark appraisal is conducted by a certified lead appraiser under the CMMI model and published in the appraisal results directory. It is a rating, not a management-system certificate.

Validity

A benchmark appraisal rating is valid for three years and is publicly listed. There is no annual surveillance; you re-appraise before expiry to stay bid-eligible.

Who gets asked for it

Software and systems development organisations, IT services firms, defence and aerospace suppliers, and offshore delivery centres bidding where a maturity level is specified.

Where this certification is demanded

CMMI is applicable across 2 of the 25 industries SIS covers. The pages below set out the specific reason it comes up in each one.

What CMMI Actually Requires

The backbone an implementer has to build, in the order it usually gets built.

1
Defined process assets

A process library covering the project lifecycle, tailored per project rather than photocopied, with the tailoring decisions recorded and approved before work starts.

2
Requirements and traceability

Requirements captured, agreed with the customer, baselined and traceable through design, code and test, with a controlled route for handling change.

3
Estimation and planning

Estimates built from a documented basis and historical data, plans covering effort, schedule, resource and risk, and a record of what was re-planned and why.

4
Configuration management

Baselines under version control, change requests reviewed before they are applied, and build records that let you rebuild any released version from source.

5
Verification and validation

Peer reviews and testing planned against the requirements, with defects logged, dispositioned and closed, and evidence that reviews happened on the projects being sampled.

6
Measurement and improvement

Project data collected consistently - effort variance, defect density, review coverage - analysed at organisation level and fed back into the process assets.

How CMMI Appraisal Works

No black box. A defined, time-bound route from first call to published maturity rating.

Readiness Review & Scoping

The organisational unit, project sample and target maturity level are agreed with a certified lead appraiser, along with which practice areas fall inside the appraisal scope.

1–2 weeks

Process Implementation Period

A process written this quarter cannot evidence a project that finished last one. Practices have to run on live work, and two to four project cycles is the usual wait.

3–9 months typically

Readiness Assessment & Evidence Mapping

Project artefacts are mapped to practice areas and gaps closed before the benchmark. A readiness pass is where weak traceability and missing peer review records surface.

4–8 weeks

Benchmark Appraisal & Rating

The appraisal team reaches a rating and it is published with an expiry date. Nothing audits you in between, so the practices either hold on their own or quietly lapse.

1–2 weeks on site; rating valid 3 years
Twelve to eighteen months from a standing start is the honest figure because evidence accumulates on real projects; where a bid deadline is driving it, an early readiness review and a tight project sample are the only two levers and both have to be pulled at the start.

Not Sure Which Certification You Need?

Three questions. The selector reads the same industry-to-standard mapping this whole site is built on, then shortlists what applies to you.

Question 1 of 3

Which sector best describes your organisation?

Twelve months of evidence cannot be assembled in six

The appraisal itself is a fortnight. The twelve to eighteen months in front of it is where the money goes, and a tight project sample is the only lever on it.

What CMMI Changes for Your Business

Certification is not a certificate on the wall. It is a working system that pays for itself.

πŸ›οΈ

Bids that pass screening

Where a maturity level sits in the eligibility criteria, an unappraised bidder is rejected at document check before anyone reads the technical proposal.

πŸ“‰

Fewer surprise overruns

Estimation built from historical data and disciplined re-planning replace optimism, and the difference shows up first in fixed-price margin and delivery penalties.

πŸ”—

Traceability that holds

Requirements traceable through design, code and test mean change requests get priced properly and scope disputes with the client end with a document.

🌍

Compared on the same scale

Maturity levels are read the same way in every market, so an offshore delivery centre is compared on the same scale as the local supplier bidding beside it.

🧱

Repeatable delivery at scale

New teams and acquired units inherit a working process instead of inventing their own. That is what makes rapid growth survivable rather than chaotic.

πŸ› οΈ

Defects caught earlier

Planned peer reviews and verification move defect discovery earlier. A defect found at review costs a fraction of the same defect found after release.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what buyers ask before they commit to CMMI.

Is CMMI a certification?
Not in the ISO sense. CMMI is a benchmark appraisal: a certified lead appraiser examines evidence from sampled projects, interviews the people who did the work, and awards a maturity level. The rating is valid for three years and published in the appraisal results directory, but there is no annual surveillance audit and no certificate issued by an accreditation body.
How long does it take to reach Maturity Level 3?
Twelve to eighteen months is typical from a standing start, and the constraint is rarely writing the process. Practices have to run on live projects long enough to leave artefacts an appraisal team can sample. Organisations already running disciplined requirements, configuration and peer review practices move considerably faster than that.
Can we appraise only part of the organisation?
Yes. The appraisal covers a defined organisational unit and a sample of its projects, and the rating statement names that unit. This matters when bidding: procurement teams do read the scope, and a rating held by a different delivery centre in the same group will not satisfy a tender that names yours.
Does CMMI replace ISO 9001?
No, and buyers frequently ask for both. ISO 9001 certifies a quality management system across the organisation, audited annually by an accredited body. CMMI rates the maturity of engineering and delivery practices at a point in time. They overlap in document control and corrective action, which is why running them together saves effort rather than doubling it.
What happens when the rating expires?
It lapses. Ratings are valid three years from the appraisal end date and the directory entry shows the expiry. Bids submitted after that date against an expired rating are normally rejected at eligibility screening, so organisations that bid regularly start re-appraisal planning around nine months before expiry rather than after it.
Who conducts the appraisal?
A certified lead appraiser leads an appraisal team, working to the defined appraisal method, and the results are submitted for publication. The lead appraiser must hold current authorisation. Consultants who prepared your processes cannot appraise the same scope, for the same independence reason that applies across all certification and appraisal work.
