What it is

A management system standard for energy performance. It makes the organisation measure where energy actually goes, set a baseline and indicators, plan improvement against them, and demonstrate that performance improved - not just that a system exists.

Who issues it

Accredited certification bodies issue it - SIS among them - after auditing the energy management system and, separately, the evidence that energy performance actually improved.

Validity

Three-year certificate with annual surveillance audits, at which measured energy performance improvement must be demonstrated, not merely planned.

Who gets asked for it

Manufacturers, processors, data centres, hospitals, large commercial buildings, utilities and any operation where energy is a controllable cost or a reporting obligation.

Gap Review & Readiness

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what buyers ask before they commit to ISO 50001.

Do we need sub-metering before we start?
Not everywhere, but you need it where the energy actually goes. A certified system requires an energy review that identifies the significant energy uses and a monitoring plan proportionate to them, which usually means metering compressors, boilers, chillers or large drives rather than every panel. Auditors accept temporary or portable measurement where it is properly documented and repeated.
Does ISO 50001 require us to reduce total consumption?
It requires demonstrated improvement in energy performance, which is not the same as lower total consumption. If production doubles, absolute energy rises while performance can still improve. That is exactly why the standard insists on normalised indicators and a baseline. At surveillance the auditor looks for improvement against those indicators and for the evidence behind the figures.
How does it relate to ISO 14001?
They share the same management system structure, so context, leadership, competence, internal audit and management review can be run once. The difference is subject matter: ISO 14001 covers environmental aspects broadly, while ISO 50001 goes deep on energy with baselines, indicators and a requirement to improve measured performance. Most organisations certify both and integrate the audit programme.
Can we certify one site rather than the whole company?
Yes. The boundary is yours to define, provided it is defensible and the certificate states it clearly. A single plant, a group of buildings or an entire portfolio can be certified. What you cannot do is draw a boundary that excludes an inconvenient significant energy use sitting inside the same operation.
How long does certification take?
Ten to fourteen weeks is typical for one site. The constraint is rarely writing procedures; it is assembling twelve months of consumption data that can be trusted, and setting indicators that hold when production varies. Sites with existing metering and a maintenance data system move faster. Tell us your reporting deadline and we will schedule backwards from it.
Will SIS identify savings for us?
No. As an accredited certification body SIS audits the system and verifies the evidence; it cannot design your energy programme, run your measurement plan or recommend projects, because that would compromise the independence the certificate depends on. Energy consultants and service companies do that work. SIS confirms that what you built is real and that performance moved.
