Does ISO 28000 get us authorised economic operator status?
Not automatically. AEO and equivalent trusted trader programmes are granted by customs authorities against their own criteria, and no certification body can issue that status. What ISO 28000 does is build and evidence most of the underlying controls those programmes examine: premises security, partner vetting, cargo integrity, personnel screening. Applicants with a certified system typically move through assessment with fewer findings.
We subcontract most of our fleet. Can we still certify?
Yes, and it is common. The system has to cover how partner capacity is selected, verified, instructed and monitored, because the customer holds you responsible for cargo on a vehicle you do not own. Expect the auditor to sample partner files: insurance currency, licensing, safety history, incident reporting obligations and evidence that poor performers were actually removed.
What does ISO 39001 add if we already hold ISO 45001?
ISO 45001 protects workers; ISO 39001 targets road deaths and serious injuries, including those suffered by other road users. It works on the factors that decide collision outcomes: speed management, route planning, vehicle condition, driver competence, fatigue. Tenders that score road safety performance ask for it by name because a general safety certificate does not evidence those specific controls.
Can a certificate cover several depots and branch offices?
Yes. Multi-site certification samples locations across the three-year cycle where a central function genuinely sets procedures and monitors performance. Sample size follows site count and risk profile, so a network of small branches is treated differently from four large distribution centres. Sites added after certification are brought into scope at the next surveillance audit.
Our customer wants temperature evidence for every load. What actually satisfies them?
Calibrated monitoring with downloadable records tied to the consignment, documented handover checks at collection and delivery, and a defined excursion procedure showing who was told and what was decided. Certification matters here because it verifies the calibration schedule and the excursion investigations, which is precisely where disputes over rejected loads are won or lost.
How disruptive is the audit to operations?
Audits are planned around your operation rather than against it. Yard observation happens during loading because that is when the controls are visible, driver interviews are scheduled around shifts, and document review runs in the office in parallel. Most single-site logistics audits take two to three days on site, with management interviews taking a few hours in total.
